Decorated for the 4th {FINALLY}

I cannot believe that I just remember to decorate for the 4th, and then I did a half hearted job of it at that! I didn't get up into the attic to get out my favorite 4th decoration (Uncle Sam) for a variety of reasons, but I did buy a couple of new things for the mantle, so hopefully they will balance each other out of the effort scale...

Here is the mantle...
A close-up of the details...
The "liberty and justice for all" was aquired on super sale last year for a mere couple of dollars.  It "lives" on one of the shelves in my office, since you know, the justice for all is kind of part of my daily life, but I busted it out it's everyday spot for this holiday.  The little uncle sam in the parade car was purchased this week at Michaels on sale.  I thought he was too cute to pass up for $6!

I also got this cute little bucket this week at World Market...
I went into World Market because I wanted to see these placemats and napkins that I saw in their advertisement...they have the preamble on them.  I'm such a nerd that I totally covet those constitutional linens, but I'm waiting to see if they are still around on post-holiday sale.  Anyway, I thought this little vintage looking bucket was so cute and totally worth the $3.99.
I bought some flags, 3 for $1 at Michaels, and made a little arrangement...

On the coffee table, I have a runner...

Outside, I have some flags...
and a couple of other things...

And that's all folks!  Maybe I'll do better next year and Uncle Sam will get to see the light of day!

Swiss Oatmeal {Copy Cat Recipe}

I'm obsessed with Swiss Oatmeal.  I particularly love  Corner Bakery's Swiss Oatmeal.  If you are not familiar with Swiss Oatmeal, it is a cold oatmeal cereal with fruit and nuts.

I've had a similar recipe for years, but it was only similar.  It wasn't close enough for my liking.  So I finally set out into the land of Pinterest to find a recipe that was a good Copy Cat.  I found a few, combined them and came up with what I think is a very close Copy Cat Recipe of Corner Bakery's Swiss Oatmeal.

Here's what I do (note, this recipe is really just pictures, because I don't really have measurements for these things.  The photos aren't great, but it's easier if I show you what I do)...

Here's the Phase 1ingredients... Milk Honey Yogurt (I use a vanilla greek yogurt) Oats (old fashioned, not quick...you probably could do steel cut too) I've simplified this to where you only need a bowl and a spoon for Phase 1 because I use my yogurt cup as a meas…

It's all about the dress...

I mean I guess it's really all about getting married, but come on, you always anticipate the dress right?  Well holy moly folks!  Today a big secret was released to the press.  No, we still don't know which dress or tiara Kate will be wearing, but we heard for the first time that Princess Diana had a back-up dress!  Here are some of the pictures and sketches...

Real dress on Left~ Back-up on the Right Here are the sketches of the back-up dress

And you know what?  I like the back-up dress better than the one she wore!  I know, I know.  I'm going to get blasted for saying that, but I'll just confess it right now... My name is Kara and I've never thought Princess Diana's dress was all that and a bag of chips.  Nope.  Not my favorite Royal Wedding Dress by any stretch of the imagination.  What is my favorite?  Probably the one that Sarah Ferguson wore when she married Andrew...
It had beautiful beading and stitching throughout.  Also on the train it had an "A&quo…

Pumpkins, Gourds & Flowers, oh my!

Yesterday, I went to the Dallas Arboretum.  Lisa, Jennifer, and I went as my birthday outing.  We got a late start due to some court delays, so we stopped for lunch first.  I needed some make-up too, so we went to Neimans.  We ogled some purses, had lunch, I got some make-up and then we headed out to the arboretum (in the rain).

It was raining pretty good on the way over, but luckily, we only needed umbrellas for a few minutes.  Thankfully the sun never came out, because it was so humid, I'm pretty sure we would have melted.

First, we made our way toward the Pumpkin Village...

I love how they made garland out of the mini-pumpkins...

These rose bushes were just stunning!  The roses on each bush varied in color from a coral, to a blush, to a purple hue...
It was Fall at the arboretum, and pumpkins, gourds, and mums are a large part of the visit.  However, they also have a Chihuly art exhibition going on.  I took so many pictures, I HAVE to make that it's whole separate post.  …
