NOLA Day One {last Friday}

I'm currently feeling some reprieve from the Allergy Assault of 2010 due to Maximum Strength Mucinex-D, so I thought I'd blog about our first day in NOLA {aka: Last Friday}.  I also decided that I think I will blog our trip day-by-day until I'm done.  So, tomorrow will be last Saturday, Sunday will be last Sunday, and Monday will be last Monday.  I took approximately 250 photos, so I'll try to edit myself and not overwhelm you.

I flew in from Dallas and Abby flew in from Houston.  I was suppose to arrive 15 minutes before her, but my flight left a few minutes late so we basically arrived at the same time.  We stayed at the Marriott on Canal.  It is one of my favorite places to stay in New Orleans for several reasons, but the biggest is that I love the location...right on the corner of Canal and Chartres.

They have done some renovations since I was there last and one upgrade is the elevator.  I'm sure you are thinking "What the heck is she talking about the elevator for?", but let me tell you, it was awesome.  Here's how it worked... You entered your floor number and it told you which elevator to get into.  We never had to wait over 15 seconds for an elevator.  We never had to share an elevator.  We never had to stop at another floor.  It was a brilliant invention!  Here is the genius keypad...
We got a great room.  Exactly what I requested...a high floor with a river view.  We also were right behind the elevator which meant (a) a short walk from the elevator, (b) we were the opposite direction from 95% of the rooms on our floor, so less noise and (c) we had a huge corner room with 2 of the 4 walls being completely windows.  Some of our views...
First thing we did after dropping our bags in the room was head out to The Bar on the Corner.  They serve these frozen lemonades that I love.  Then we carried our frozen lemonades down Decatur Street to the French Market.  Here is our crappy iphone self portrait of this event...

We hit up one of my favorite stores in New Orleans...a Christmas Store...and bought too much and then it was time to head for the room to get ready for dinner.  But first, we made a pit stop at Walgreens.  A whole case of water for the $4 that a bottle cost in our room.  Oh, and we purchased the first of several bags of Zapps!
For Dinner on Friday night we went to Dick & Jenny's  in Uptown.

I had had my heart set on ordering the Beggar's Purse that my Dad had been raving about since last September when he was at Dick & Jenny's, but of course it wasn't currently on their ever changing menu.

But here is what we did have...

Jenny's Salad with Baby Greens, Blue Cheese, Diced Apple, Spicy Pecans & Blue Cheese Vinaigrette
Savory Bay Shrimp and Black Bean Cheesecake with Summer Corn Salsa & Fire Roasted Poblano Aioli
The Surf 'n' Turf Trio with Beef Tournedos with a Trio of Demi Glaces: Crab-Caper, Shrimp-Sage & Crawfish-Creole Mustard served with Red Bliss Potatoes & Green Bean Amadine
It was all very scrumptious, but sadly we had no room for dessert.

After dinner, we took a cab back to the Quarter and I took Abby down Bourbon Street to see the sights since it was her first trip to New Orleans.

The back of St. Louis Cathedral...
Our nighttime view from our room...
And that's all of Day One!  Stay tuned for more tomorrow...

Swiss Oatmeal {Copy Cat Recipe}

I'm obsessed with Swiss Oatmeal.  I particularly love   Corner Bakery's Swiss Oatmeal.  If you are not familiar with Swiss Oatmeal, it is a cold oatmeal cereal with fruit and nuts. I've had a similar recipe for years, but it was only similar.  It wasn't close enough for my liking.  So I finally set out into the land of Pinterest to find a recipe that was a good Copy Cat.  I found a few, combined them and came up with what I think is a very close Copy Cat Recipe of Corner Bakery's Swiss Oatmeal. Here's what I do (note, this recipe is really just pictures, because I don't really have measurements for these things.  The photos aren't great, but it's easier if I show you what I do)... Here's the Phase 1 ingredients...   Milk Honey Yogurt (I use a vanilla greek yogurt) Oats (old fashioned, not quick...you probably could do steel cut too)    I've simplified this to where you only need a bowl and a spoon for Phase 1 becau

Europe 2023 {Day 9 ~ Munich & Bavarian Alps}

 On Tuesday, December 20th I grabbed breakfast at the hotel and then walked about 15 minutes to where I met my tour for the day.  On my first visit to Munich, I only had time for one "day trip" outside of the city and I chose to go to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, but I always knew I wanted to venture down to the Bavarian Alps and see some castles on my next visit.  I had booked the premium tour and it was so fancy.  There was a snack bar and they even served beer and wine on the way home after the last stop of the day.  First stop was at Linderhof Castle. This was a "small" castle of King Ludwig's that was a partial mini-replica of Versailles.  It was a snowy walk to the castle... Interior photos were not allowed, but you can see some pics of the interior HERE Like Versailles, there are fountains and sculptures surrounding Linderhof, but they cover the statues with wood huts to protect them from the winter elements. After visiting Linderhof, we made a (to

It's all about the dress...

I mean I guess it's really all about getting married, but come on, you always anticipate the dress right?  Well holy moly folks!  Today a big secret was released to the press.  No, we still don't know which dress or tiara Kate will be wearing, but we heard for the first time that Princess Diana had a back-up dress!  Here are some of the pictures and sketches... Real dress on Left~ Back-up on the Right Here are the sketches of the back-up dress And you know what?  I like the back-up dress better than the one she wore!  I know, I know.  I'm going to get blasted for saying that, but I'll just confess it right now... My name is Kara and I've never thought Princess Diana's dress was all that and a bag of chips.  Nope.  Not my favorite Royal Wedding Dress by any stretch of the imagination.  What is my favorite?  Probably the one that Sarah Ferguson wore when she married Andrew... It had beautiful beading and stitching throughout.  Also on the train it had an &quo
