I should have bought a VW Beetle

One year ago today, I bought my 4-Runner.  It has been a great car so far, even if I have been kind of rough on the side mirrors.  BUT...I should have bought a VW Beetle instead of the SUV, and here is why...

Today I went to Nocona.  I went because my 3 cousins were in from Alaska.  I didn't really look forward to driving 100 miles there, only to spend a few hours and then drive 100 miles back, but they came from ALASKA, so that seemed like the least I could do.

Heather and Autumn live in Anchorage, while Julie lives in Nome.  It's been many years since all three of them were here in Texas together and it was nice to see them all.

Random facts:  Julie used to live just outside of Fairbanks in a town called "North Pole".  To make it better, the street she lived on was called "Loose Moose Loop".  I told her today that I miss getting to send a Christmas Card to Loose Moose Loop in North Pole.  Now she lives in Nome right by where the iditarod race is finished.

Here we all are... (left to right: Heather, Autumn, Me, and Julie)
Autumn has two of the most well behaved and well mannered kids I've ever been around.  Ethan, who loved the leaf piles...
and Merica, who has pretty red hair...
Julie has a little girl that is ever bit as sassy as Julie was when she was little, and she is adorable.  Meet Miss Ayla...
Now back to the 4-Runner vs. Beetle situation.  My Mom has been cleaning out closets because at some point in the next few months, they are doing a major remodel of both bathrooms and incorporating one of the closets in their bedroom to make the bathrooms a little bit bigger.  Well I have been hearing about how much of my childhood crap she has in a closet and how ridiculous it is that I'm wanting to hang on to these things when she is out of storage room.  She had a nice big pile of stuff for me to take home and a nice big pile of stuff for me to sort through.

We found my baby blanket...
Yep, that tattered heap of a mess is my blanket.  At one point it had ducks all over it (I think).  You can't say it wasn't well loved!  I checked.  It still felt very comforting to run the satin edges between my fingers (which is what I always did with it).

There was much evidence of my years of Andre Agassi obsession...
I tossed the multiple cork boards filled with every newspaper clipping, advertisement and Tennis Magazine article, but kept my now "Vintage Agassi" posters.  I may have to hang them in my closet :)

I sorted through every college report card, high school report card, stupid certificate I ever received, newspaper clipping (and the multiples of every clipping) and every other piece of crap my Mom had kept.  Here was the real kicker.  The real, "what the heck is wrong with you and why are you keeping this" thing I found was a receipt for my prom dress.  THE RECEIPT FOR MY PROM DRESS!  FROM 1994!!!  It was at this point, that I told Mom I didn't really think she had accurately diagnosed her storage problem.  The problem was not that that I was sentimental about my stuffed Mickey Mouse and some Barbie dolls, but the fact that she was a pack rat!  Dad asked if she thought we were going to return it.

We filled a dumpster.  We filled my car.  And then I left.  And that folks is why I should have bought a beetle instead of a SUV!  So Mom couldn't ship an SUV full of boxes of stuff home with me for me to now figure out where to store it!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I currently have a copy of every Danielle Steel book ever written in the back of my car too awaiting a trip to Half Price Books...unless Mom comes and steals them back during the night!

I find that I'm not as sentimental about things when my Mom packs it up to send it to my house!! :) Please tell me you kept the blanket?!

What a fun day trip. Glad you got to see your cousins!

I get sent home with those types of boxes too. Not too long ago I found an envelope with my very first month of canceled checks ever! It was fun to see what I had written them for.

Shhh...don't tell Becky. She's been treatening to send all of my stuff home with me too! I do not have room for 300 Cross country medals to live in my house. However she has plenty of space--Ha!!

That is too funny. I still have my blankie in a storage bin in my closet..although it didn't receive near as much love as yours did ... ha. Funny to see what we keep when we go back and look at it after years of having not seen it.

Well if you lived in a house that has only 3 closest, like me...that could have helped! Maybe? Your love for tennis or the men of tennis makes me laugh.

Swiss Oatmeal {Copy Cat Recipe}

I'm obsessed with Swiss Oatmeal.  I particularly love   Corner Bakery's Swiss Oatmeal.  If you are not familiar with Swiss Oatmeal, it is a cold oatmeal cereal with fruit and nuts. I've had a similar recipe for years, but it was only similar.  It wasn't close enough for my liking.  So I finally set out into the land of Pinterest to find a recipe that was a good Copy Cat.  I found a few, combined them and came up with what I think is a very close Copy Cat Recipe of Corner Bakery's Swiss Oatmeal. Here's what I do (note, this recipe is really just pictures, because I don't really have measurements for these things.  The photos aren't great, but it's easier if I show you what I do)... Here's the Phase 1 ingredients...   Milk Honey Yogurt (I use a vanilla greek yogurt) Oats (old fashioned, not quick...you probably could do steel cut too)    I've simplified this to where you only need a bowl and a spoon for Phase 1 becau

Europe 2023 {Day 9 ~ Munich & Bavarian Alps}

 On Tuesday, December 20th I grabbed breakfast at the hotel and then walked about 15 minutes to where I met my tour for the day.  On my first visit to Munich, I only had time for one "day trip" outside of the city and I chose to go to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, but I always knew I wanted to venture down to the Bavarian Alps and see some castles on my next visit.  I had booked the premium tour and it was so fancy.  There was a snack bar and they even served beer and wine on the way home after the last stop of the day.  First stop was at Linderhof Castle. This was a "small" castle of King Ludwig's that was a partial mini-replica of Versailles.  It was a snowy walk to the castle... Interior photos were not allowed, but you can see some pics of the interior HERE Like Versailles, there are fountains and sculptures surrounding Linderhof, but they cover the statues with wood huts to protect them from the winter elements. After visiting Linderhof, we made a (to

It's all about the dress...

I mean I guess it's really all about getting married, but come on, you always anticipate the dress right?  Well holy moly folks!  Today a big secret was released to the press.  No, we still don't know which dress or tiara Kate will be wearing, but we heard for the first time that Princess Diana had a back-up dress!  Here are some of the pictures and sketches... Real dress on Left~ Back-up on the Right Here are the sketches of the back-up dress And you know what?  I like the back-up dress better than the one she wore!  I know, I know.  I'm going to get blasted for saying that, but I'll just confess it right now... My name is Kara and I've never thought Princess Diana's dress was all that and a bag of chips.  Nope.  Not my favorite Royal Wedding Dress by any stretch of the imagination.  What is my favorite?  Probably the one that Sarah Ferguson wore when she married Andrew... It had beautiful beading and stitching throughout.  Also on the train it had an &quo
