October Plans

As I've said before, I love October.  It's a time of decorating, fall leaves, crisper air (hopefully), football, and lots of other activities.  I'm so excited that it's almost here.  I have been busy planning lots of activities for October, so I made a list... (1) Canton Trade Days:  I love going to Canton.  You can buy just about anything you want there.  I try to go at least twice a year...once in the fall and once in the spring.  I'm not looking for anything specific, but i'm just loading up my shopping card and heading to East Texas. (2) State Fair of Texas:  CORNY DOGS (obviously) are the highlight of this upcoming trip.  The petting zoo is also high on my State Fair list of activities I love. (3) Autumn at the Arboretum:  Jennifer's 2nd grader has a week off in October for fall break.  He asked her what activities she had planned.  For the most part, we have a full calendar of court planned, but somehow, I don't think that was what he w

New Glasses from Warby Parker

I heard about Warby Parker a couple of years ago from the source where I have found out about so much information and "favorite things" over the years...Ms. Oprah Winfrey.  Oprah is a big fan of Warby Parker eyeglasses. I went to the eye doctor a couple of weeks ago and decided that I wanted some new glasses, so Warby Parker was my go-to place.  I was very excited to see that they had a store in Dallas.  They don't have stores in a ton of locations, but if they don't have one in your area, they have a neat little mail order program where you can pick out 5 frames, and they mail them to you to try. The process of selecting frames was very quick for me.  I was probably in and out in about 15 minutes.  It was primarily because I loved almost every pair I tried.  It kind of made me wish I didn't wear contact lenses because I would have totally bought 4 pair!  Since I only wear glasses a couple of hours a day, I had to select just one. {they have an awesome sungl

Mindy Kaling Day

You know how people always talk about the five people they'd have as dinner guests if they could have anyone?  Well, I can tell you, for sure , that Mindy Kaling would be one of my five.  I love her.  She is smart.  She is funny.  She is stylish.  She would be the perfect dinner guest. This week I'm celebrating Mindy Kaling Tuesday because it's a big day for Mindy lovers everywhere.  First, her much awaited second book is being released today. Second, her show The Mindy Project is launching it's 4th season over on hulu.  Fox didn't pick it up, but smartly hulu did.  So I'll be getting a hulu subscription so I can watch the one show that makes me laugh the hardest. It's not too late to get on board as a Mindy fan.  If you haven't watched The Mindy Project, seasons 1-3 are streaming on hulu (seasons 2 and 3 are better than 1, so stick with it).  If you haven't read Mindy's first book, I recommend it too.

Ready for October

I know we still in the first half of September, but October will be here before we know it.   October is definitely one of my favorite months! When I was out shopping this weekend, I popped into TJ Maxx/Homegoods, and their Halloween game was on point y'all!  They had just about anything Halloween you could want, and even tons of things that you didn't even know you wanted.  If you have any Halloween needs (and sadly, I do not), head out to your TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Homegoods.  They seem to be ready to roll into October. As I said, I don't need another Halloween thing, BUT since I've never met a tree that I didn't think could use more ornaments, ornaments are always a purchase I can rationalize buying.  And since I'm an eccentric nut who has a Halloween tree... these Radio Shiny Brites were calling my name! If you have a keen eye, you might have noticed that my Halloween tree from last year already had some Shiny Brite ornaments, but not THE

One for the (royal) record books

Today, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II breaks her great-great grandmother Victoria's record as the longest reigning Monarch... QEII has now been Queen for 63 years, 217 days, and you know I cannot resist celebrating along with the royal celebrations! I just think this is so amazing, especially in light of the way she became the monarch.  This is a story of twists and turns, that if you read it and didn't know better, you would think it fiction.  Princess Elizabeth was born 3rd in line to the throne.  Her grandfather, George V was King.  Her uncle Edward was the heir, and her father Albert, the spare.  Her uncle took the throne after her grandfather died, then ultimately decided to abdicate, which led to her father becoming King George VI, and her being heir to the throne.  When her father passed away in 1952, she became Queen at the age of 25.  25!!!  Can you even imagine? I love the quote from a speech she gave in 1947... "I declare to you all that my whole

A Kitchen Mini-Update

While I would like to make some substantive changes to my kitchen (backsplash, counter tops, floors), I do not currently have the budget for such changes.  Over the past year, I made some small changes to the kitchen that were a little more budget friendly, but still give a little update to the room. I bought these chairs from Craigslist about a year ago.  I didn't get around to painting them until January.  Then I recovered them in this peacock blue velvet. I also did away with the yellow painted walls, and just painted them cream.  This is not my dream color for the walls, but in working with backspash color, etc., it works.  Also, it is the same color as the lower part of the walls (below the chair rail) in my dining room, so it's a nice tie in.  The color is from Benjamin Moore and it's called Mayonnaise . I also got some new art for the space. I got this pear print with a mirrored frame at Canton Trade Days I ordered this print's image

Booties for Fall

Do you ever just get a bee in your bonnet and decide that you cannot live without a certain fashion item?  I sure do.  Friday night, the bee in my bonnet was black suede booties.  Why on earth I decided that I couldn't live the weekend without some black suede booties, I have no idea.  I mean, it's not like the temps are even cool enough to wear something like that in Texas for another couple of months, but I decided I couldn't live without them, and went on an internet search.  I had earned a DSW rewards certificate, plus they sent out another coupon for this labor day weekend, so I looked there first.  I located several pair at my local store, in my size (which is a miracle), and headed out on Saturday morning to try and locate this item I couldn't live without. I tried on several pair, and here are some of them... This was the pair I went with my eye on.  It's by Adrienne Vittadini and is called "Truman". Here it is in grey, which is very pr
