Gift Wrap

I Love Gift Wrap.  I have more than any normal person needs.  If ever I wasn't having to use one of my bedrooms as a home office, I might be inclined to have a gift wrap/hobby room.  But right now I just have a gift wrap closet...a very small closet in my guest room.  Because it is very small and guests seem to expect to be able to hang up a piece or two of their clothes when they visit, I had to get it very organized.  Here is a photo tour... Now, for the record, I always wrap a gift.  By wrapping a gift, I mean old school...boxes, paper, etc.  I hardly ever use a gift bag.  But there is the occasion when something is odd shaped and you might need to use a bag.  I had a great idea recently.  Let me show you... This happens every single time!  Someone is so nosey and a photo hound. Okay Lola, move out of the way and I'll take your photo... Cute! Now back to my idea... This is a gift that I just wrapped for a friend's upcoming birthday. They are selling these bags a

My Favorite Emmy Moments

It take a real major catastrophe to keep me from watching an award show (except all those Country Music ones that they seem to have every 6 weeks).  I know that everyone doesn't always watch.  My law partner, Jennifer, never watches.  I think she does that just to irritate me.  Anyway,  here are my favorite Emmy Moments (and P.S. I now have such a crush on Jimmy Fallon because he is so funny!) The opening skit... Two of My Favs: George Clooney and Modern Family A Musical Tribute to 3 shows going off the air... Now for the dresses.... Sure there were some pretty dresses, but there weren't any that I was over the moon with.  There were a few disappointments though... It's not that this is bad, but doesn't she wear this same darn dress to everything? Spice it up a little! ick, ick, ick! I had a strong dislike for January Jones' dress and this falls under a total disappointment I LOVE Lauren Graham and think she is so beautiful, but this was a total

Cupcakes, Shopping and Award Show...Oh My!

This weekend has been made up of several of my favorite things...cupcakes, shopping and award shows! Let me recap... I was never so happy to see a week come to an end as I was on Friday!  It wasn't that it was a particularly bad week, but it was just the longest week in history.  Hopefully this week I will be back in the swing of things and be used to leaving my house by 6:30 three morning a week.  On Friday, after I was done with school, court and some other work, I headed down to Dallas.  I had two rings that were being re-sized (seems my knuckles are bigger and my fingers fatter) and I went down to  pick those up.  While there, I made a run to Society Bakery.  I had been wanting to pay them a visit.  They've been voted best cupcakes in Dallas and some of the best in the country, so I thought I needed to give them a try.  I got 4 different ones and Jennifer and I sampled them all. They aren't particularly pretty, but they were pretty good.  They still don't to

Thursday's Ramblings

I have nothing exciting to talk about, so here are a few ramblings going through my mind: (1) I'm so darn glad it is Thursday, but really wish it were Friday.  I.  Am.  Exhausted!  Seriously exhausted.  First week back in school, it is always tough to get used to a new schedule. (2) All of my classes are so different.  I always find it interesting.  My 7 a.m. class is made up of mostly high school kids.  They are scared little sheep.  They won't enter the classroom until I get there.  They huddle out in the hallway and wait on me.  I have told them that they can go inside.  I have told them that they give me a heart-attack at 6:50 every morning when I walk up and see them out there because I think the door is locked and I don't have a key!  We'll see if they make any progress tomorrow. My 8 am class is tardy and 3/4 asleep.  That's all I know about them so far.  They're real dullards. My Wednesday night class thinks I'm hilarious, but I'm sure I

Random Shop-a-thon

First I want to say that it is Tuesday night, school is in session, and I'm home for the 2nd night in a row!  I totally feel like I'm playing hookie from school!  I think I'm going to enjoy having 4 of the 5 nights during the work week at home again! Today, I thought I'd pop by a couple of stores and look for a throw to lay over the arm of my sofa.  Lola likes to lay on the left arm of the couch when I am home, and it's getting some little snags.  I mention the "when I am home" part because she only does it when I am at home.  Period.  If she is alone, she lays on her adorable Anthropology bed.  She's an odd duck.  Anyway, I thought I could find a pretty throw to lay over the arm and solve my problem.  Sure I could make her stop laying on the arm of the couch, but I think we all know who rules the roost around here and that ain't happening.  Anyway, turns out that when you go into a store and ask if they have any throws within 24 hours of thi

Back to School

Well, it's that time again... Back to School.  I cannot say that I'm entirely enthused about it either, though that is probably on account of only a week off between Summer School and Fall Semester starting up.  This semester, I'm teaching 3 classes again...Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and then Wednesdays at 7-9:45 p.m.  Yep, Wednesdays are going to suck.  Big time.  I anticipate that I'll be mainlining caffeine from pre-sun-up to sun-down. I had to share my favorite school photo of all time with you guys because I believe it reflects my attitude for today. No, this isn't just some funny photo I found online, this is my friend Lisa's little boy, Tommy, 4 years ago when he was in Kindergarten.  He hated school and by darn wasn't about to fool anyone who might view his photo in the yearbook into thinking otherwise!  Love it!  It has lived on my refrigerator ever since because it cracks me up!

Reservations...check!

The excitement is building...  I just made all of our dinner, brunch, etc. reservations for the trip to NOLA next month.  I love that moment when you hang up with the very last restaurant...All the stress of "where am I going to eat" is over, the reservations are made and now all that's left is showing up and enjoying it!  I know most people don't fret over such things, but people, I'm serious about it.  I've got a spreadsheet for every single trip mapping out each and every meal! I also enjoy making reservations for New Orleans because every single place I called said one or more of the following, "We look forward to having you back", "It'll be good to see ya' again darlin'", "Oh, Kara, I've got you here in the system...".  Now I know they don't know me from Adam, but they've got me in their smart little computers and it makes making reservations so darn easy. So looking forward to K-Paul's, GW Fin

Otters

I got my Otterbox this week.  I'm pleased because it is not as big and bulky as I had anticipated.  Though it is basic black and not a cute color, I'm still happy to have it.  It is a relief to not feel like I'm toting around a faberge egg on a daily basis!  And in other otter news, it is less than a month until I go to New Orleans and get to go visit the Otters.  I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE otters and almost always go visit the Otters at the Aquarium.  I'm certain I'll drag Abby there to visit the adorable little creatures!

Melt in Your Mouth Goodness

Tonight I participated in Restaurant Week by going to III Forks.  I was also suppose to have gone to Stephen Pyles last night, but (a) I didn't love the RW menu they put out, and (b) was worried I might be too tired after staying out late Tuesday night (and boy was I!), so I cancelled that. Tonight I had 4 courses that included: Crawfish Beignets, III Forks Salad, Filet Mignon, and Berries Bread Pudding.  Yum-O! (sorry~iphone photo) My only complaint, if it can even be called that, is that the plates are so hot, they feel like they've been plucked directly from the sun.  Since I like my steak Cold Rare, it kind of continues to cook it a little.  I guess the bulk of the population probably doesn't have this issue, so it probably hasn't occurred to them. But it was a really great meal and now I'm so sleepy, I can barely hold my eyes open.  I think tonight may be the second night in a row that I go to sleep before 10 p.m.!

Ryan Star Concert

I've been dying to post about this all day!  But I had to go to two courthouses this morning because I had a client with a felony and another with a misdemeanor, so it took a bit of time to deal with their issues, and then I had a client meeting this afternoon, so I'm just now getting around to blogging about last night.  Darn clients and court!  Don't they know I had loads of fun to blog about? Last night  I went to see Ryan Star in concert in Dallas.  I coerced my friend Lisa into going with me.  I got her a copy of his new album, 11: 59, so that she could be up on the music.  We started out the evening at Twisted Root Burgers because it was only a block from our venue down in Deep Ellum.  They give you a celebrity's name that they call out when your order is ready.  Lisa was Juno... Then we went to get in line.  I was first in line (did you have any doubts) and very excited.  A storm started to kick up, so we were hopeful to get inside before it really started ra

Eat Pray Love

This evening, Lisa and I went to see Eat Pray Love .  We had both recently read the book.  I thought it was pretty good.  It didn't stray too far from the book, but where it did, I was so thankful.  For example, I found the time in India that she spent in the Ashram to be incredibly boring in the book and they kind of jazzed that up in the movie.  Also the house search for Wayan in Bali was majorly shortened (thank God!).  If you liked the book, I bet you'd like the movie.  On another good note, the movie didn't make me crave Gelato like reading the book did!

Commercials I Love

I generally hate commercials and never watch them, but every now and again, some will come around that I LOVE.  Currently I'm loving the Zappos commercials.  Have you seen them?  They take actual calls and then have muppets act them out.  They are just so darn funny because you can't imagine calling and saying these things!  Here are my three favs: This is probably the one I can relate to the most! While I didn't get home until 8 p.m. tonight ( I had to go to Waco to the Children's Home), I'm so glad that it is Friday!!!  Have a great weekend!

Taking a Breather

Tonight was the last night of Summer School.  I gave an exam, so I was done early and have already posted all the grades!  So now I get to take a breather until 7 a.m. on August 23rd.  That's when Fall starts back.  I wish, oh how I wish, that they would start Summer School a week earlier so that we got a 2 week break between Summer II and Fall, but nobody asks me. So in my week of leisure, I have several fun activities planned, so stay tuned for a little fun next week! Now on to one of my favorite subjects...make-up!  I had totally convinced myself that I was not going to go  to Neimans for a Fall revamp of all my make-up for a few reasons:  (1) I own like every color of eye shadow that is made, (2) I still have tons of my green palette made by the Hasidic Jew from last Fall, and (3) my Fall splurge was on clothes...and a trip to New Orleans next month.  But I had been hearing this little palette from Urban Decay calling my name... I kept thinking that it wasn't real

Starting Over...

Today is about starting over...I have a new fairy godmother.  I don't know how, but I think there is a little bit of magic involved.  I got the order processed at about 4:45 yesterday afternoon.  My fairy godmother came from Pennsylvania and she arrived before 10 a.m. today.  There was some FedEx priority overnight involved, but I still think maybe a little magic too. I'm happy to report that I have my new FGM all up and running, and I am NOT having the dreaded issue that I had before that made me hate my 1st iphone 4 so darn much!  (I was face dialing in case you were wondering...hitting all sorts of buttons with my face when talking...a sensor issue they think).  Now I'm just being super careful until my Otterbox arrives.  Oh and my uncle told me about a third party warranty program that offers insurance for iphones, so I took that out immediately.  Afterall, my new FGM may be great, but she's still made out of GLASS ! Hopefully me and my new FGM on are a path t

Gratitude-aka: iphone disaster update

My heart is overflowing with gratitude for a guy named Jason who works at Apple.  I got through to Jason yesterday and after begging and pleading and generally sounding pathetic, he agreed to take my cause to the higher-ups.  Basically, he managed to get approval for them to do a phone swap...send me a brand new phone and I send back my shattered mess of a phone at no cost.  All of this was accomplished because I had been having an issue with my original phone and he argued that they were still working on the issue that I was having and they hadn't really determined that I didn't need to send the old one back for a replacement anyway, so they should just do a swap now.  He got approval at about 8ish last night, but the department that sends out new phones was closed, so he couldn't check to see if they have any in stock. I just heard from him and they do have them in stock, so they are sending my new phone out today or tomorrow at the latest.  Jennifer's husband got

How's It Going?

How's it going you might ask.  It's a new week.  Are things looking up?  I think I'll answer that question with a picture... Sometimes my left hand still doesn't really work.  I forget that sometimes it doesn't work.  I grabbed my phone with my left hand and it slipped right out and hit the pavement.  I'm waiting on a guy from Apple to call back with possible solutions...other than paying the $199 to get the face replaced (yes, that's what the phone cost me a little over a month ago).  Would you believe that it actually still works?  It does, but the Apple guy told me to not use it unless totally necessary, so if you are a person who calls me, call my house!

Blogiversary...a day late

Happy 2nd Blogiversary to Me!! Well, actually yesterday was my 2nd Blogiversary.  I thought it was today, but then realized this morning that yesterday was in fact August 7th.  Oh well!  Welcome to my belated 2nd Blogiversary and 650th post!  Whether you are new follower or been around for the full 2 years, thanks for reading! Now for the reveal of these... According to my math, there were a total of 25 entries for the Tervis Tumblers, and per Random.org, my random number between 1 and 25 was....(dadadadadadadda)...#14!  Number 14 is Abby! Funny enough, I just saw Abby last night at her sister's Encore Wedding Reception... Congrats Abby and thanks to everyone for entering.  I hope to do more giveaways soon, so stay tuned! P.S. Abby:  I know where you live and I know which tumblers you want, so I will get on placing the order ASAP!
