The Defendant of my Dreams

I've already been pouting this week because my uncle is in DC with my cousins on spring break. Of all the weeks to be in DC! Let's just look at the list of things that have been going on this week: (1) A state visit and dinner with the Camerons, (2) George Clooney on The Hill testifying, (3) George Clooney at the State dinner, (4) Many from the case of Downton Abbey in town for the State dinner and NOW... (5) George is arrested for protesting outside the Sudanese embassy! The Defendant of my dreams...

No repeats please

Today is Groundhog Day, and I pray that it will not be like the movie and repeat itself.  Not that it was particularly bad.  Nothing horrible happened, but it was just one of those busy days where everyone seemed like they were placed on this early to annoy you. This morning started out with the following plan: (1) Jennifer and I had a "firm client" that was set at 8:30.  He has been a continual pain for months and we were happy to be resolving of his case.  I had spoken on the phone with him yesterday (twice) to give him directions for today.  Not to mention the fact that he has been in trouble before, so this wasn't his first rodeo. Plan was to jointly discuss everything with him and then Jennifer would handle the plea, while I went to deal with... (2) I had a client that was set for an arraignment because we are set for a Jury Trial on Monday.  Basically, this entails the judge calling us up, asking if we are ready for trial, and then telling us wh...

A job for Lola?

I found this clip and was fascinated by it. Dogs in Court. I think that is a fabulous idea. Though it's only being used to aid victims having difficulty testifying, I'd like go on the record and say I'd like to have a dog in court also. I've dislike many of my clients enough that I've needed a calming presence in the courtroom as well. I yelled at Lola before I watched the whole thing and said, "Hey Lola, it's time for you to get a job! We can even carpool to the courthouse." Then I saw the part that the dogs need to be quiet. Lola's out. She's the most talkative dog you'll ever run across. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy

Legal Funny

It's been a while since I've blogged a Legal Funny.  Not because I go a day without something cracking me up, but sometimes I forget.  This one comes by way of one of my partner's cases.  It's a Child Protective Services case in which she is representing the child.  She was reviewing paperwork today for a hearing that is scheduled tomorrow.  In reading the mother's psych eval, she ran across this line... "She identified fatigue as her primary obstacle to employment in the past" Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I didn't know that could be an obstacle to employment, or I'd have totally used it!  Do bill collectors accept that as an excuse for not paying your bills?

Legal Laughs!

So from time to time, I run across funny things in my work. I thought I would use this format to share them with friends. We had a divorce client and needed to e-mail the soon-to-be ex some documents. When Jennifer got the e-mail from the ex, the e-mail address went something like this... ournewlife08@whatever.com this just really cracked us up! can you imagine changing your e-mail address to this? wonder why this one won out? why not, myhusbandjustdivorcedme@yahoo.com , or finallyridoftheoldballandchain@gmail.com , or boywhatacrappyyear@hotmail.com ? Warning to Readers: The are not real website (at least I hope they aren't)... just figments of my imagination. Please don't click on them and try to send an e-mail!
