After having my Friday and part of Saturday's plans turned upside down, I had a goal of keeping my Sunday plans exactly as they were. First stop was Sarabeth's Tribeca for breakfast. Their lemon ricotta pancakes are a must when in NYC!
I then walked down to the 911 memorial and museum. I had purchased tickets for the museum in advance. I arrived a little early, but then let me go on in. I didn't actually go into the museum early though because I discovered that for some reason, American sent my original bag to NYC. It had been at LaGuardia since Saturday, but their stupid system hadn't updated that info until Sunday. I spent a considerable amount of time in the lobby of the museum on the phone with American Airlines lost luggage hotline trying to figure out if they could get my bag from the airport to the hotel before I headed back to Dallas in less than 24 hours.
This is known as the survivors stairs. They were located on Vesey street and were many survivors path out.
The antenna from the top of the towers...
The last column removed...
This is part of one of the buildings where the planes hit one of the buildings. The bent metal at the bottom is where they say the plane hit.
Some of the metal that collapsed causing the towers to crash.
"No day shall erase you from the memory of time"...
After the museum, I walked back toward Soho. I stopped at a couple of stores, and then hit up my favorite cupcakery...Georgetown Cupcakes. I got a couple to eat in NYC and some to bring home.
Then I had reservations for a late lunch at Balthazar. I ended up going with the petite steak and frites.
After I was done at Balthazar, I took an uber back to my hotel for a little nap before I went to the US Open. I took the 7 train out to Queens to the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
The new Althea Gibson statue...
The signature drink at the US Open was super yummy... the Honey Deuce
My seats turned out to be great!
I got to see two matches. The first was Madison Keys vs. Elina Svitolina, and the second was Stan Wawrinka vs. Novak Djokovic.Former tennis player, Goran Ivanisevic is coaching Djokovic now, and his player box was on my side of the stadium, so I found him in the crowd (white t-shirt seated there on the first row)...
Djokovic had been battling a shoulder injury the whole tournament, and had to quit the match in the 3rd set (because of course he did. That is very indicative of this whole trip!)...
I got back from tennis really late, and guess what had shown up... my original bag! Woo-hoo! Just in time to take it home. I was damned and determined I wasn't paying American Airlines extra to check a second bag so I stayed up until 1:30 a.m. reorganized everything and took inspiration from Russian nesting dolls!
I woke up on Labor Day and had a bit later flight than I had originally booked, so I walked to have breakfast. I hadn't planned a place in particular, but as I walked around on Saturday and Sunday, I notice that Eric Kayser has opened some restaurants in NYC. Eric Kayser's was a place I enjoyed breakfast in Paris, so that's where I went on Monday morning for a Croque Madame and Pain Au Chocolat.
After that I went back to the hotel and checked out. I took a taxi to Newark, NJ for my flight back to Dallas. Storms were predicted all afternoon and I was really nervous about getting out, but luckily my plane left before the storms really hit!
And that was my Labor Day weekend in NYC! It was one for the ages!
