Europe 2022 {Day 8 ~ Nürnberg & Munich}

Monday, December 19th started in Nürnberg.  I left out of the hotel to go have breakfast and quickly realized the sidewalk was covered in ice.  They hadn't treated about a block and half worth, so I slid down hill before finally hitting a portion that had been treated.  I had an unremarkable breakfast and then tried to walk through the market a little.  It was mostly still closed and a little too slick...

Look!  I took a pic of my hotel after all...
I waited for the store to open to buy more of the Nürnberg gingerbread and then headed to the train station to take a train to my next destination, Munich.
I arrived in Munich and took a taxi to my hotel.  I couldn't check in early at the hotel, so I stored my luggage and then headed out.  I have been to Munich before so I didn't have a big list of things to do that afternoon.  I went to Marienplatz, which is just a few minutes from my hotel, and holds the largest Christmas Market.
I walked around a few minutes and debated where to go for lunch before deciding to go to Schneider Bräuhaus.  Their menu is in German only (which seemed like a good sign for authentic food), but I was able to pull up the menu online to read in English.

I almost went for the schnitzel again, but decided to try something different.  I had the mixed salad and then the fried potatoes with chunks of roast pork, ham, egg and onions.
It was so good!
I went wandering around at this point.  Back to Marienplatz...
Then I went to Asamkirche.  I visited last trip, but it was after dark and it was hard to see the interior.
I could only tell that it was worth seeing in the daylight and I was right.

I went back to a spot right by the hotel that I had read was a must visit...
This cafe fries up these donuts or Schmalzundeln as you stand there.  They rolled them in sugar and it was awesome!
I went and got checked in at the hotel and then went to the Viktualienmarkt.  It was located at the end of the block with my hotel.  This isn't a Christmas market but is an open air market that operates all of the time in Munich (except Sundays).  They sell produce, flowers, meat, cheese, etc.  I just love browsing through places like this.

It has a large maypole

I went back to Marienplatz to look around some more.

I then walked to a different location where a couple of markets are located (window shopping as I went).  I first went to Wittelsbacherplatz where the Middle Ages Market is located.  I hadn't visited this market on my first trip to Munich.  It was very on-theme.  The booths all looked like the middle ages, the wares they sold were very middle ages, and they were even roasting a pig! (But then they sold churros, so I guess they weren't 100% committed to the theme)

Odeonsplatz
I toured the Residenz on my first trip to Munich, so I didn't do that again, but I did visit the Christmas Market there.
I love a singing Moose and the Residenz market has one.
You see these at markets all over Germany, but I think they are authentic to Munich and are sold at Oktoberfest too

I really like the Residenz market.

I walked back to Marienplatz where they had a choir singing
I thought about grabbing a bite at the market, but my hotel is right across the street from Eataly, so I decided to go there for dinner.  I had pizza...
...but most importantly, I had Gelato.  They had one of my favorites that is hard to find, Mascarpone & Caramelized Fig (with Stracciatella...I almost always get Stracciatella as one of my flavors).
I stayed at Hotel Blauer Bock again this trip.  I looked at a lot of hotels, but I really just like the location of this hotel, plus it's clean and the price is good.  I borrowed this pic from the hotel because I forgot to take one again.

It used to house Benedictine Monks.  The walls are super thick, and the doors are like vault doors thick, so it's pretty quiet.  I just did the single room here, which is small, but I knew what to expect.  I think it may be under new ownership as there had been some small changes.  One I appreciated is that they have key cards to the rooms now.

That's the end of Day 8.  I had a big day planned for the next day, so I didn't have a late night.

Swiss Oatmeal {Copy Cat Recipe}

I'm obsessed with Swiss Oatmeal.  I particularly love   Corner Bakery's Swiss Oatmeal.  If you are not familiar with Swiss Oatmeal, it is a cold oatmeal cereal with fruit and nuts. I've had a similar recipe for years, but it was only similar.  It wasn't close enough for my liking.  So I finally set out into the land of Pinterest to find a recipe that was a good Copy Cat.  I found a few, combined them and came up with what I think is a very close Copy Cat Recipe of Corner Bakery's Swiss Oatmeal. Here's what I do (note, this recipe is really just pictures, because I don't really have measurements for these things.  The photos aren't great, but it's easier if I show you what I do)... Here's the Phase 1 ingredients...   Milk Honey Yogurt (I use a vanilla greek yogurt) Oats (old fashioned, not quick...you probably could do steel cut too)    I've simplified this to where you only need a bowl and a spoon for Phase 1 becau

Europe 2023 {Day 9 ~ Munich & Bavarian Alps}

 On Tuesday, December 20th I grabbed breakfast at the hotel and then walked about 15 minutes to where I met my tour for the day.  On my first visit to Munich, I only had time for one "day trip" outside of the city and I chose to go to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, but I always knew I wanted to venture down to the Bavarian Alps and see some castles on my next visit.  I had booked the premium tour and it was so fancy.  There was a snack bar and they even served beer and wine on the way home after the last stop of the day.  First stop was at Linderhof Castle. This was a "small" castle of King Ludwig's that was a partial mini-replica of Versailles.  It was a snowy walk to the castle... Interior photos were not allowed, but you can see some pics of the interior HERE Like Versailles, there are fountains and sculptures surrounding Linderhof, but they cover the statues with wood huts to protect them from the winter elements. After visiting Linderhof, we made a (to

It's all about the dress...

I mean I guess it's really all about getting married, but come on, you always anticipate the dress right?  Well holy moly folks!  Today a big secret was released to the press.  No, we still don't know which dress or tiara Kate will be wearing, but we heard for the first time that Princess Diana had a back-up dress!  Here are some of the pictures and sketches... Real dress on Left~ Back-up on the Right Here are the sketches of the back-up dress And you know what?  I like the back-up dress better than the one she wore!  I know, I know.  I'm going to get blasted for saying that, but I'll just confess it right now... My name is Kara and I've never thought Princess Diana's dress was all that and a bag of chips.  Nope.  Not my favorite Royal Wedding Dress by any stretch of the imagination.  What is my favorite?  Probably the one that Sarah Ferguson wore when she married Andrew... It had beautiful beading and stitching throughout.  Also on the train it had an &quo
